Concept2 erg calculator: convert splits to watts, pace, and time
The only Concept2 erg calculator you need, with heart rate training zone guide and boat speed predictor.
Enter any two fields of your choice — the remaining values will calculate automatically.
CrewLAB Training Zones
Enter your Max Heart Rate to see a rough approximation of your training zones, including heart rate and lactate ranges.
Boat Speed Predictor
Estimates how fast you could row 2,000m on the water, assuming flat conditions and good technique. Enter your weight — 2K watts are pulled automatically from the converter above.
Projections use an erg-to-boat speed model. Individual technique and conditions will vary.
What It Calculates
More Than a Split-to-Watts Converter
Most erg calculators stop at pace and power. This one goes further — translating your erg numbers into heart rate zones and predicted boat speeds across every major crew class.

Heart rate training zones
Enter your max heart rate and the calculator outputs five personalised training zones — as both beats-per-minute ranges and their equivalent rowing splits. This bridges the gap between heart-rate-based programming (common in cycling and running) and the split-based language of rowing.
Coaches can use it to prescribe aerobic sessions by HR to athletes who train with monitors, while keeping everything anchored to the numbers on the Concept2 screen.

On-water boat speed predictor
Your erg score tells you where you stand individually. The boat speed predictor tells you what that means on the water. Enter your 2K erg time and the calculator estimates expected boat speeds across all seven major rowing crew classes, using established performance models.
who is it for
Built for every level of the sport
Competitive rowers
Know your 2K target split in watts, build training zones from your max HR, and see how your erg output would translate to every boat class before you hit the water.
Rowing coaches
Prescribe sessions in splits, watts, or HR — whichever unit your athletes respond to. Use the boat speed predictor to benchmark recruits and build informed lineups before you’ve even done seat racing.
Clubs and programmes
Share one link with your entire squad. Every athlete gets the same consistent framework for zones and pace targets — no more athletes using different zone calculators or asking what their split should be in each piece.
Beginners
New to the erg? The heart rate zone feature gives you a practical starting point for training intensity before you have race benchmarks to work from. Just enter your max HR and start there.
FAQS
Find answers to all your questions.
How does the training zones feature work?
Enter your maximum heart rate — typically found from a race, max-effort erg test, or a supervised field test. The calculator divides that into five standard rowing training zones (UT2 through AN) and displays each zone as both a BPM range and a lactate level. There is also an additional note on what you should focus on in each zone.
How does the boat speed predictor work, and how accurate is it?
Enter your 2K erg time and the calculator applies established performance models to estimate on-water boat speeds for the 1x, 2x, 2−, 4x, 4+, 4−, and 8+. The models are based on aggregated race data and assume average crew efficiency, standard rigging, and flat water. Predictions are most accurate for well-trained athletes rowing in standard conditions. Lightweight crews, junior athletes, or boats with significant technical variability will see more deviation. Treat the output as a useful benchmark, not a precise race forecast.
What is an erg calculator and how does it work?
An erg calculator converts between different rowing performance metrics — most commonly between split times (pace per 500m) and power output in watts. The Concept2 rowing machine uses a fixed mathematical formula: watts = 2.80/split³, where the split is expressed in seconds. Our calculator automates this instantly so you never have to do the algebra mid-workout.
How do I convert a rowing split into a watt?
Enter your 500m split into the calculator above (e.g. 1:52) and select “split to watts.” The formula is Watts = 2.80 / (split in seconds / 500)³. A 1:52/500m split equals approximately 246 watts. For the reverse — watts to split — enter your power number and the calculator solves for pace
What's a good 2K erg time for my age and gender?
The Concept2 World Rankings publish age- and gender-specific benchmarks. As a rough guide, competitive collegiate male rowers typically aim for sub-6:10 and females sub-7:00. Lightweight, masters, and junior categories have their own standards. Use the calculator to translate any benchmark split into a wattage target for training.
ABOUT
CrewLAB is the leading club and team management platform designed to transform ordinary sports teams into unstoppable crews.
Founded by former athletes and coaches, CrewLAB was built to solve the operational problems that coaches and club administrators actually deal with — fragmented communication, manual attendance tracking, scattered training data, and the challenge of keeping athletes engaged across a full season.
The CrewLAB platform brings communication, scheduling, wellness check-ins, athlete analytics, video, lineups, and roster management into one place. It’s designed for the full team ecosystem: coaches, athletes, parents, and club administrators all working from the same system, with role-based access built in from the start.
CrewLAB is trusted by more than 20,000 athletes across rowing, running, and swimming programmes worldwide — and is fully SafeSport compliant, so teams can communicate confidently without worrying about policy risk.
